A million dollar letter

Oracle wanted to demo their new Anti Money Laundering Software to CTOs in the banking sector. This direct mailer piqued the interest of nine of the eleven recipients who attended the event personally and generated over $1.1m in sales.

The envelope bore a sensitive question.

Since this letter was aimed at CTOs, the client wanted to ensure the letter was not opened by their personal assistants. The nature of this question let the recipient to believe the subject matter was very sensitive and went straight to the desk of the CTO.

The letter made the challenge unique.

The letter challenged the critical thinking mind of the CTO and when the solution was not apparent, those really curious actually showed up to the event with the letter in hand to have the answer. Ultimately, the solution was that the letter was a lipogram and avoided even a single use of the letter ‘e’ - a clever analogy for how money laundering, in small amounts, can be hidden in plain sight.
